Creative Thinking Statement

Creative thinking involves imagining the future or what it could be. This is a crucial skill that is developed and nurtured at the University of Washington. Through my time studying there, I learned to consider other perspectives, the “what if,” and the effects of the outcome. Because of these skills the world continues to change and techniques, and aspects of the world continue to change and innovate.
I want to further this concept into Psychology. During a critical psychology class, I led a group of members to question the rhetoric and agenda pushed by the DSM. Analyzing what the diagnostic statistical manual is supposed to be, where it strays from this and how we can make it more progressive and inclusive of our current times. In this writing, we demonstrate critical thinking as its root. Looking at a currently used medical manual and analyzing how we can improve it better fit a more global and up to date manual that encapsulates more than just western ideals. Through this work, I came to better understand the idea of critical thinking. Questioning the goals and ideas and seeing how we can move this manual forward with time. Through the discussion of the stigmatization of the DSM-5tr I learned to uncover and discuss progressive outlooks towards the future. Through this process showcasing critical thinking, myself and my group learned to push ideas and look at the broader picture. Considering more than what is expected of the DSM, we look at a more globally inclusive outlook that can be maintained through future editions of the manual. This project forced me to learn about the many different outlooks on the DSM, making me dissect and find the common themes, errors and trends. Having to compare across cultures and ways of life. All this is the goal to make the DSM more progressive. Allowing me to come to a better understanding, not only of a diagnostic manual but also of culture and how they are affected by western pushed ideals and rhetoric. Seeing how these diagnoses affect and effect people in various ways.
Another case in which I utilize critical thinking skills was during my institutional and capitalism class that was focused on Disney. Through this we were tasked with re-writing a scene from a movie and adapting it to be more inclusive of the current time. Through this, I chose to re-imagine a scene in the movie, “The Lion King” where Simba is used for a trap to kill his father Mufasa. Through this project, I had to apply critical thinking of the current times and find a better way of conveying a sincere message through the dialogue. Re-imagine a staple of my childhood. My changes to dialogue promote a more inclusive and resonating character arc of the main character Simba. This assignment encouraged me to look at the broader notion of the words used in writing. Using critical thinking, I was able to alter the writing to follow a more inclusive message that promotes progressiveness of movies and media.
Interdisciplinary research
Through my endeavours in education, I found myself having to do a lot of in-depth background research. Pushing to question the source of certain societal factors and the pushing of certain ethical codes. An example of this that I conducted was during a dissection of the DSM-5tr from a classical Marxist perspective. With this, we look at the direct influence that the DSM has on a societal outlook, connections to the government, and direct impact on the people.
Through my work during the project, I would interview close friends. Looking at direct firsthand experience within the society that the DSM was created around (western society). Then, using cross-cultural firsthand research. My group and I were able to conduct a cross-perspective analysis in order to identify issues within the writing of the DSM. Through this cross-perspective research, I came to the personal understanding of the mixed signals that the DSM houses. Major studies done by the National Library of Medicine would prove to be a very good source as it correlated a lot of our findings. Most of the findings leading us to believe that the writing neglects to include the significance of varying cultures. Rather, working to push a more western expected circumstance. This ultimately led me to conclude that the DSM being a more generalized diagnosing manual towards a western perspective. The diagnoses fail to consider growing in differing conditions compared to a normal western life. Making diagnoses much harder to be certain of and causing an uptick in the numbers of misdiagnosis globally.
Another example of my research skills came from a personal project conducted on the impact of environmental food waste on the environment. Through this writing, I share my research on the impacts of food waste that has been documented from 2020-2024. Using Environmental Protective Agency (EPA) and US Department of Agriculture's annual reports to support and continue my argument.
Through this writing, I worked to show the depth which is ignored when dealing with food waste. When I started my research, I started with EPA. Being as their report directly correlates to this issue. Having a good fundamental understanding and starting ground is the first step to uncovering more. As I continued through this research, The department of agriculture was mentioned a few times throughout the document. This prompted me to move to this annual report after finishing the EPA’s report. Through the documents, I would highlight important numbers, statistics, and supporting evidence lines. A key part of my research discussed had to due with the depletion of freshwater and impact of food waste on economic waste. AKA, we produce too much of certain foods without adjusting price to reflect waste amounts. Causing more to be bought then wasted. One thing that really struck me with this research was realizing how food waste also creates more greenhouse gases. This being significant due to the fact of landfills and other waste management cooperations contributing even more C02 emissions on top of the trash already.
Overall, these pieces of research show a person who is a critical thinker and a deep researcher. Looking towards the future and considering more than what is expected. Pushing others to wonder and prompt critical and explorative thinking.
Diversity and Equity
In my studies at the University of Washington, Bothell. I ended up enlisting in two classes than I felt, truly benefiting me cross-culturally. These classes being Feminist studies and Latin American Studies. Through these classes, I learned the significance of understanding and considering differing perspectives and life experience. Through the ideas of institutionalized oppression, sexism and racism moving forward we must consider how these operations of power affect work. Through the outcomes of these classes, I want to work towards creating a better, more equalized idea of work. Considering all these things, I move forward and work towards finding a way to equalize the discrepancies of inequality in the workplace and work towards solutions that consider the broader scope of our society.
Through my time in feminist studies, my group and I produced a podcast in which we discussed Latin American ideals and deep-rooted misogyny that is in grained within the culture. Specifically, we discussed the idea of Machismo vs Machisma. This being a deep set in belief of the nuclear household model. In this the men maintain power through the house and the women are held to certain expectations that are unreasonable. I feel that this resembles a lot of our current society's workplace models. Meaning, women are expected to do more to earn similar pay compared to their male counterparts. Through this understanding, I can consider this more as I continue to work in various workplaces, educational settings, and in society as a whole. This is a consideration that most must maintain in order for us to better work towards this. Through my leadership skills and understanding, I want to work in places that would allow me to work towards better mitigating this disparity. This is a very big thing for me as a worker. Working towards the understanding of different gender differences as well as cross-culturally.
This brings me into my Latin-American studies. Through this class, we were all shown how many differing cultures from Central and South American have played vital roles in shaping our countries current days model. Through the inspirations from Mexican culture like Rodeo and desert farming becoming integral parts of American culture now. Through this understanding of Latinx driven polices and beliefs, I wish to encourage these. Business policies put into place by Latinx political leaders all encourage diversity and cross-cultural importance. These are Ideas I wish to bring into the places in which I work. No matter the background, gender identity, or racial identity. I want to be able to work alongside all others in order to produce a better suited society for the future. One that includes all of us.
Through all of this. The understanding that I have gotten through these classes has allowed me to take a deeper, more critical look at the scope of my work. Considering more than just what is expected. Instead, I can lead with a foot forward in my work. Working to go above and beyond and consider outside circumstances. This also speaks to my ability as a leader. Not being afraid to discuss issues, impositions at work, and reasoning to find a solution. These classes give me a critical eye as a worker and sympathy and reason as a leader.
